KIU, Western Campus - On October 2, 2025, the Institute of Biomedical Research (IBR) at Kampala International University Western Campus (KIU-WC) marked a significant milestone in scientific capacity building with a hands-on training session focused on Primer Design and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis. The event brought together 30 faculty members and postgraduate students from diverse biomedical disciplines, aiming to strengthen practical competencies in molecular biology.

The training was officially opened by Prof. Emeka G. Anyanwu, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences (FBMS), alongside Dr. Ibrahim G. Wawata, Head of the Institute. Their remarks emphasized the critical role of molecular techniques in advancing diagnostics and biomedical research across Uganda and the region.

Led by IBR experts Mr. Mosuba Abubakar and Dr. Aminu Umar Argungu, the session blended theoretical instruction with immersive laboratory practice. Participants explored core principles of primer design—including specificity, melting temperature, and GC content, while mastering PCR protocols and troubleshooting strategies to enhance amplification efficiency and accuracy.

The training featured interactive modules on primer design tools, sample preparation, gel electrophoresis, and documentation and analysis. These activities enabled participants to translate textbook knowledge into real-world laboratory skills, fostering confidence in conducting precise molecular assays.

The training underscored IBR’s dedication to nurturing a new generation of researchers equipped with the tools and expertise to tackle pressing health challenges. By investing in practical training, KIU Western Campus continues to position itself as a hub for biomedical innovation and education.
