KIU, MAIN CAMPUS — Kampala International University (KIU) School of Law held a career guidance session on January 17, 2025, to advise Year 3 and 4 Bachelor of Law students on elective course unit selection.
Organised by the Office of the Dean (School of Law), career guidance was dedicated to nurturing not only academically excellent students but also professionally ambitious ones.
Present at the career guidance session was the School of Law Dean Dr. Esther Kisubi Christine who recently defended her ground-breaking dissertation on Environmental Justice in the Oil and Gas Sub-Sector in Uganda.
During the session, Dr. Kisubi emphasized balancing academic performance with professional ambition.
“Align your courses to what you want to practice. Do not do a course because it is easy. Learn to challenge yourself and learn what is in line with what you want to practice,” said Dr. Kisubi.
She also advised students to dress professionally and be at their best at all times, “Law is a conservative profession so, you must dress and present yourself appropriately”.
Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, Head of the Department for Public and Comparative Law, advised students to pursue their passions and dream big. “Before all of you get out of here, you must set goals for the next five years. You must dream and work on your academics to match your dreams,” he stressed.
“All things begin with small dreams and then they get bigger. So, chase your dream and do not give up,” Dr. Mohamed added, noting the significance of having a vision, mission, and positive thinking.
Jennifer Ogol Ameo, Senior Legal Officer - Judicial Service Commission and Patron of the Kampala International University Law Society who stands out as a well-balanced litigator whose skills encompass trial advocacy and arbitration in general commercial law echoed the role of technology in the legal profession.
"You are young be adaptable, flexible, and explore emerging areas like cyber security, data protection, and environmental law. Learning never stops and technology is ever-advancing. You have to learn how best you can take advantage of technology advancement," she advised, adding “KIU is hitting greater horizons, we are winning, people keep asking me how we are doing it but the question is, are you going with it?”
As KIU continues to soar to greater heights, its students are poised to make their mark in the legal profession. With the guidance of experienced faculty members and a commitment to academic excellence, KIU law students are ready to take on the challenges of the future.
