KIU, MAIN CAMPUS – Kampala International University (KIU) Main Campus Directors, Deans, and Principals began the year with a rigorous staff training workshop organized by the Directorate of Human Resource.
Held on Thursday, 8th January 2026, just days after the semester resumed on Monday, 5th January, the workshop took place in the Senate Board Room. Its purpose was to equip top administrators with refresher training in communication skills and teamwork—two pillars of effective leadership.
Communication Skills: Building Trust Through Feedback
The program opened with a session on communication led by Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, Vice Chancellor, who emphasized that communication is a daily skill requiring constant improvement.
“Always take feedback as an instrument that will help you improve, whether it is positive or negative,” Prof. Ngoma advised, noting that effective communication builds trust and influence—qualities essential for leadership.
He cautioned leaders against dismissing feedback or punishing those who deliver it:
“If you want to fail in your leadership position, block feedback. Crucifying the person who carries it to you marks the beginning of your failure.”
Prof. Ngoma urged administrators to first own feedback, then reflect on its validity and respond objectively—whether by improving if it is true or correcting impressions if it is false.
Teamwork: Unity as the Path to Success
In a session on teamwork, Ambrose Kibuuka, Board of Trustees Representative, underscored the importance of unity in achieving success.
“When people win, they win as a team; when they lose, they lose as individuals,” he remarked.
He added that teamwork often requires humility:
“Sometimes we must do things we do not like to achieve the things we desire, because pride stands in the way of success. Work as a team and see how opportunities flood in.”
Timeliness and Impact
Christine Ainebyoona, Deputy University Secretary (Main Campus), highlighted the timeliness of the workshop, stressing that the skills acquired by top management would cascade down to benefit the departments they lead.
“You cannot win alone; everyone needs someone to lean on. Stop clinging to the past—reflect instead on mindset and feelings,” she advised.
The workshop brought together KIU’s top administrators, including: Dr. Mustafa Mundu, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration; Prof. Regina Ejemot-Nwadiaro, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Consultancy & Extension; Dr. Jacob Ashibi, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and other Dean, Principals, Directors, and Coordinators.
