KIU, Western Campus - The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Kampala International University Western Campus recently hosted an Innovation Day event, showcasing the creative talents of its students in science and technology.
The Innovation Day was designed to promote creativity among students that will lead to innovative ideas that can attract funding. This in turn will bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, promote hands-on training and also encourage training with production
The event, held on February 4, 2025, brought together eight groups of students who presented innovative solutions to two challenging topics: designing a wheelchair for use on staircases and designing a system to move loads on staircases.
According to Dr. Ibrahim Babangida, the Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor, of Academics and Research, "The Innovation Day event is a testament to KIU's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and creativity in science and technology. We are proud of our students for showcasing their talents and innovative ideas."
A panel of judges, comprising three experts, evaluated the presentations using a scoring guide formulated by the Mechanical Department. Dr. Abubakar awarded certificates to the top three groups.
The winning teams were:
- Ssebagala John Felix and Ayikola Peace (BSME1.2)
- Talimusiinwa Harriet and Arimpa Monica (BSME2.2)
- Kitimbo Joash Hosea and Akite Brenda (BSME4.1)
The event was attended by the Deputy Director of Innovation, the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Associate Deans, Department Heads, staff, and students.
As KIU continues to invest in science and technology, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is committed to producing innovative and creative graduates who can drive economic growth and development in Uganda and beyond.
