KIU, Main Campus— Mathew Sunday, also known as MC Banks, is one of the many graduates who returned to Kampala International University (KIU) for postgraduate education in the January 2025 intake. After completing his undergraduate degree in Mass Communication, Sunday has taken an unconventional path, opting to pursue a Master of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration.
Sunday spent three transformative years at KIU's Main Campus in Kansanga, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication. The warmth and friendship he experienced within the KIU community left an indelible mark, making him eager to return. The university's announcement of a half bursary for postgraduate studies drew him back to pursue his master's degree.
“I enjoy learning so much. And the KIU community has been so welcoming and friendly to me. I really enjoy this environment, and that’s why I had to come back home,” he said.
Most of the people Sunday graduated with in November 2023 have since embarked on chasing their respective careers, with only a handful have choosing to further their education.
“A number of reasons inspired me to pursue a master’s degree at KIU, but key among them is that I wanted to enhance my career prospects, especially in mass communication and social work, and acquire enhanced knowledge in this field,” he said.
“I also wanted to foster my personal growth and develop critical thinking while intervening in problem-solving to help my people, especially those facing serious situations, as well as to network with my peers in the same career as we dive deeper into understanding specific problems,” he added.
When asked about his transition from Mass Communication to Social Work and Social Administration, Sunday explained that he aimed to explore the intersection between the two fields. Recognizing the conflicts, differences, and similarities between Mass Communication and Social Work, Sunday emphasized the importance of understanding this connection. "So, it's more important to understand these two," he noted. Sunday also noted, “It is interesting to be a master’s student. We are diving deeper into understanding complex issues and studying in detail.”
“It requires a lot of research, critical thinking, balancing school with work, business, as well as attending workshops. So, it is a wide new experience for me,” he added.
To friends, family and fans looking up to him, Sunday had this to say, “Stay focused on your goals, keep praying to God, stay organized, pray for God's intervention and try to utilize the power of making connections”.
