KIU, Main Campus - Kampala International University (KIU) has once again solidified its prestigious standing, retaining its position as the number one private university in Uganda and across the East African region according to the latest Webometrics World Ranking of Universities released in July 2025. KIU also maintained its place as the second-best university in Uganda after Makerere University.
The latest Webometrics report saw a significant shake-up at the very top of the East African university hierarchy. Makerere University ascended to become the number one university in East Africa.
"We are immensely proud of this consistent recognition from Webometrics," stated Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, the Vice-Chancellor of Kampala International University. "Maintaining our leadership is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students. It reflects our strategic investments in digital infrastructure, cutting-edge research, and a vibrant online presence that makes our academic output accessible globally."
This performance underscores KIU's commitment to academic excellence, research visibility, and digital presence.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. The ranking system evaluates universities based on their web presence and impact, considering factors such as
- Visibility: Impact based on the number of external referring domains.
- Transparency: Citations from top 310 cited researchers (excluding top 20 outliers) from Google Scholar.
- Excellence: Research papers in the top 10% most cited (2019–2023) from Scopus / Scimago. KIU's strong showing indicates its robust digital footprint and the widespread dissemination of its academic and research work.
As KIU prepares to celebrate its 25th Anniversary during the 31st Graduation Ceremony on July 26, 2025. The consistent top rankings in Webometrics serve as a powerful testament to the university's quarter-century journey of growth, innovation, and unwavering dedication to academic excellence, providing a strong foundation for future milestones and continued impact in the region and beyond.
Furthermore, KIU's continued success reinforces its role as a leading higher education institution in East Africa, attracting students and researchers continent-wide. With a focus on integrating technology into learning and research, KIU is well-prepared to lead in shaping professionals and innovators in East Africa's digital transformation.
