KIU Research Ethics Committee Strengthens Ethical Research Capacity Through Comprehensive Training


KIU, Western Campus - Kampala International University’s Research Ethics Committee (KIU-REC) hosted a dynamic training session designed to enhance ethical research practices among scholars and supervisors. Held on June 13, 2025, the workshop brought together leading voices in research ethics to equip participants with practical tools for responsible conduct in academic investigations.

The session focused on key pillars of ethical research, including informed consent, community engagement, the pivotal role of Research Ethics Committees (RECs), and supervisory responsibilities. Discussions emphasized the growing need for researchers to uphold human dignity and institutional integrity throughout the research lifecycle.

Notable facilitators included Prof. Patrick M. Aja, Ms. Akandinda Mildred, Ms. Mbabazi Asiati, Ms. Kiconco Olivia, Prof. Ahmed Kiswezi, Prof. Martin Nduwimana and Ms. Kyomuhendo Medrine. The guest speaker was Prof. Gatrude N. Kiwanuka from Mbarara University of Science and Technology Research Ethics Committee (MUST-REC). Their insights underscored the cross-institutional collaboration required to foster a strong ethical research culture.

Interactive Q&A sessions allowed attendees to explore practical challenges and ethical dilemmas, enriching the dialogue between presenters and participants. The afternoon segment expanded into crucial topics such as participant care protocols, material transfer agreements, stakeholder engagement, and the REC submission process.

The session was expertly moderated by Dr. Elna Owembabazi and Assoc. Prof. Milon Selvam. In his closing remarks, Prof. Martin applauded the depth of engagement, while Prof. Ahmed, Chairman of the KIU-REC, awarded certificates of participation to attendees, reinforcing the university’s commitment to ethical research excellence.

This training marks another step in KIU’s ongoing mission to nurture a responsible research ecosystem—one rooted in transparency, accountability, and shared scholarly values.
