Hidhir Musabu Dukundimana, a student of Kampala International University (KIU) won a gold medal for Uganda at the Union of Africa Karate Federations (UFAK) East Region Cadets, Juniors and Seniors Karate Championships held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 28th to 31st, 2026.
Dukundimana was among four Ugandan karate athletes selected to represent the country at the regional championship.
He clinched the men's 67-kilogram kumite title after edging Ethiopia's Natanaen Habtamu Taye 4-3 in a closely contested final.
His victory contributed Uganda's only gold medal at the tournament. Uganda finished fourth overall with four medals, one gold and three bronze medals.
Host nation Kenya topped the standings with 47 medals, including 16 gold, 22 silver and nine bronze medals.
Ethiopia placed second, while Madagascar finished third among the 14 participating countries.
KIU Karate Coach Patrick Muhimpundu praised Dukundimana's achievement, describing it as a reflection of the university's commitment to excellence in sports.
"We are very proud of his performance for Uganda," Muhimpundu said.
"Dukundimana demonstrated great determination and represented both the country and KIU with distinction. This is the standard we expect from athletes who compete under the KIU banner," he added.
Dukundimana’s gold-medal performance adds to KIU's growing reputation in martial arts and highlights the university's contribution to Uganda's success on the international sporting stage.
