KIU Titans Begin Semifinal Push Against YMCA Hamstars

KIU, Main Campus - KIU Titans begin their push for a return to Uganda’s top-flight basketball league tonight when they face YMCA Hamsters this evening in Game One of the 2026 FUBA Division One semifinals at YMCA Wandegeya.

The semifinal opener is scheduled for 8 p.m. EAT, with KIU seeking to take an early advantage in a best-of-five series.

The Titans booked their place in the last four after sweeping Miracle Eagles 2-0 in their quarterfinal series. KIU sealed the series with a dramatic 70-68 victory in Game Two at Ham Stadium on Sept. 20. 

YMCA Hamstars, meanwhile, reached the semifinals after eliminating Ihoops Basketball Club in the quarterfinals. Ihoops entered the playoffs as the top seed, but YMCA's strong postseason run ended the campaign of one of the division's leading contenders. The Hamstars had earlier won Game One 68-60 before Ihoops levelled the series, setting up a decisive Game Three. 

The matchup brings together two teams that finished at different points of the regular-season standings. KIU finished fifth, while YMCA Hamstars finished eighth, but their playoff journeys have reset the competition as both sides now stand four victories from promotion to the National Basketball League.

For KIU, the semifinal represents another important step in a campaign aimed at making a quick return to the top flight after relegation from the NBL in 2025.

The Titans have gradually rebuilt their squad under head coach Julius Lutwama, blending experienced players with emerging talent. Their quarterfinal victory over Miracle Eagles demonstrated their ability to handle pressure, particularly in close games. 

In the decisive Game Two against Miracle Eagles, Akena Ryan Arthur posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Daniel Odonkonyero also scored 15 points, while Yesman Bushiri and Ambrose Olum added 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

YMCA will arrive with its own momentum after overcoming Ihoops in a quarterfinal series that went the distance. The Hamstars' victory adds another layer of intrigue to a semifinal in which KIU will have to contend with a side that has already shown its ability to upset higher-seeded opposition.

Road to the Final
The semifinal series will be played under a best-of-five format, meaning the first team to win three games will advance to the Division One final.

According to the FUBA playoff schedule, Game One between YMCA Hamstars and KIU Titans is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at YMCA Wandegeya. The second meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the same venue.

The wider Division One and Division Two semifinal programme begins with KU Ladies vs. Junior Lady Jaguars at 6 p.m., followed by YMCA Hamstars vs. KIU Titans at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The semifinals carry a UGX 5,000 entrance fee.

For the Titans, however, the immediate task is straightforward: win Game One and take the first step toward completing their mission of returning to the NBL.
