KIU Tops UUSSC Inaugural Inter-University Surgical Skills Competition

KIU, Western Campus – Precision, teamwork and practical expertise came to the fore as Kampala International University (KIU) emerged the overall winner of the Uganda University Surgical Societies Consortium (UUSSC) inaugural Inter-University Surgical Skills Competition, held at Makerere University on Saturday, September 26th, 2026.

Organized under the theme, “Fostering Surgical Excellence through Unity, Knowledge and Skills,” the competition brought together surgical societies from universities across Uganda 

The competition featured surgical skills assessments, quizzes and surprise activities, giving participants an opportunity to demonstrate their clinical knowledge, technical abilities and teamwork in a competitive setting.

KIU recorded the highest overall score of 86.3%, followed by Makerere University with 75.5%, while King Ceasor University placed third with 74.6%. Kabale University finished fourth with 72.01%, followed by Busitema University with 67.54%.

The KIU team comprised Modestus Faith Akello, President of the KIU Surgery Society (KIUSS); Morris Muchangi Karimi, who was named Best Overall Participant; Melissa Lynette Takuwa; Caroline Amaguru; Lily Rhoda Auma; and Farhat Tinka.

Karimi’s recognition as Best Overall Participant added an individual distinction to KIU’s team achievement, highlighting the strong performance of the university’s participants in the competition.

The competition provided a platform for surgical students to complement their academic training with practical application while interacting and learning alongside peers from other universities.

KIU’s performance further highlights the role of student-led surgical societies in creating opportunities for medical students to strengthen practical skills, build professional connections and pursue surgical excellence through collaborative learning.
