KIU Trains Postgraduate Supervisors on AI-Powered Research Platform

KIU, Main Campus - Kampala International University (KIU), through its Directorate of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR), on Monday, September 28th, 2026, held a training session for doctoral committee members and postgraduate research supervisors on the use of the University’s new AI-powered e-supervision platform.

The training introduced researchers and supervisors to the e-supervision system and mobile application, which were developed to strengthen the quality of postgraduate research at the Master’s level. The platform is expected to improve accountability, streamline the supervision process, and align postgraduate research with national priorities.

Speaking during the training, Prof. Ngoma Muhammed, Vice Chancellor, said the platform will improve the way postgraduate supervision is conducted at the Master’s level.

He urged lecturers to guide and advise students throughout the research process, noting that the University has put in place stronger systems to ensure the production of quality research outputs.

Prof. Joseph Wamala, Director of Distance and E-Learning, said the use of the platform will enable lecturers to identify areas of the research process that require improvement.

“As we use the platform, lecturers will identify areas that need to be modified. This will help us improve the research processes that we go through,” Prof. Wamala said.

He added that the system will promote transparency and ensure that supervisors follow a structured process when guiding students.

“This is an organised system that will help us achieve transparency. We urge supervisors to ensure that, as they supervise students, the students are also able to learn something so that we can present candidates who can cause an impact on society,” he said.

Christine Ainebyoona, Campus Administrator and Deputy University Secretary, said the platform will help the University track postgraduate research progress and better understand the gap between student enrolment and timely completion of research.

The training also featured a practical demonstration of the platform by Edrine John Kamulya, an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Developer, who took the doctoral committee members and supervisors through the system.

The demonstration covered how to log into the platform, access the supervisor workspace, administer students, monitor research progress, and provide comments and feedback where necessary. 

The platform is designed to enable supervisors to see when a student last worked on a research project and monitor the progress made.

Through training KIU researchers and supervisors on the AI-driven platform, the University is strengthening its efforts to create a more transparent, efficient, and accountable postgraduate research environment while enhancing the quality and relevance of research produced by its students.
