KIU Western Campus Hosts Transformative Training on Competence-Based Curriculum

KIU, Western Campus - Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education, held a pivotal training session aimed at preparing academic staff for the implementation of Uganda’s Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC). This initiative aligns with national education reforms and regulatory requirements as the campus prepares to receive high school students trained under the new curriculum framework.
The full-day workshop brought together lecturers from the School of Nursing Sciences and the Faculty of Education for an intensive learning experience, divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The training was facilitated by esteemed external experts, including Mr. Tukakira Authur, a regional trainer with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), and Ms. Nuwagaba Maureen, both of whom guided participants through the principles and practices of CBC.
The session commenced with opening remarks from key university leaders: the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Western Campus), the Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research (ADVC-AR), the Campus Administrator, and the Dean of the Faculty of Education. Their messages emphasized the importance of aligning teaching practices with evolving educational standards. Also in attendance were the University Secretary, ADVC for Finance and Administration (ADVC-FA), Director of Academic Affairs (DAA), various deans, and academic staff from the participating faculties.

Morning Session Highlights
The morning session (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) focused on foundational concepts and pedagogical shifts required for CBC implementation. Topics included:
- Introduction to the new curriculum
- Comparison between knowledge-based and competence-based approaches
- Background and objectives of CBC
- Competence-based lesson modelling
- Triangulation in lesson modeling and teaching methods
Facilitators emphasized the shift from rote learning to skill acquisition, critical thinking, and learner-centered instruction.
Afternoon Session Highlights
The afternoon session (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM) transitioned into practical application, equipping lecturers with tools to design and deliver CBC-aligned content. Topics covered:
- Lesson preparation under CBC
- Developing a competence-based scheme of work
- Crafting effective competence-based lesson plans
Participants engaged in interactive discussions and collaborative exercises to internalize the curriculum’s demands and opportunities.
