#KIU32ndGrad: From Clinical Medicine Diploma to Full Medical Doctor: Godfrey’s Inspiring Journey at KIU

KIU, Western Campus - When Godfrey Mugabo first stepped onto the Kampala International University’s Western Campus, he saw only a place to earn a degree. Six years have passed, and he will soon walk across the stage as a fully qualified medical doctor, proud to wear the graduation gown that will symbolize a journey of perseverance, leadership, and unwavering faith at KIU’s 32nd graduation ceremony.

Godfrey’s KIU story began with a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health, a stepping stone that quickly turned into a lifelong commitment to healing. “I was elected faculty president of Allied Health Sciences during my diploma,” he recalls, and that role taught him how to lead with humility and service. His early involvement in St. Luke’s Chapel as a missions coordinator deepened his spiritual life and laid the foundation for the compassionate care he would later bring to patients.

While serving as class representative throughout his medical course, Godfrey faced contentious issues and personal challenges from his peers. “Handling those moments taught me patience and the importance of listening,” he says. He also served as chief of protocol in the guild chambers, navigating a 2021 scandal involving blackmail attempts. “God was with us, and we sailed through,” he remembers, grateful that the council emerged stronger.

KIU’s reputation for exposing students to a wide array of clinical settings played a pivotal role in shaping Godfrey’s confidence. “From Lira Regional Referral Hospital to Jinja, Kayunga, Hoima, and Kiryandongo hospitals, the university gave me hands‑on experience that no textbook could match,” he explains. These rotations convinced him that he could become a good doctor, and he has.

Beyond the wards, Godfrey embraced the university’s vibrant, multicultural community. “Being an international university, KIU allowed me to associate easily with students from different cultures,” he explains. This diversity broadened his communication skills and prepared him for a global medical career.

Godfrey is so grateful for KIU’s 40 % bursary offer, which eased his financial burden. “That support motivated me to work harder, maintain excellence, and fully participate in academics and extracurricular activities,” he notes.

Upon graduation, Godfrey plans to complete his internship, serve underserved communities, and eventually specialize in a field that allows him to contribute to medical research.
