#KIU32ndGrad: Sharif's Journey to Becoming a Doctor through Resilience, Persistence, and Ultimate Trust

Sharif Kalibbala Booza is set to don the graduation gown on November 29, 2025, at Kampala International University’s (KIU) 32nd graduation ceremony in Ishaka, Bushenyi District. He will be awarded a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree, marking the fulfillment of a long-held dream.

“It’s a childhood dream that has come true,” Sharif says with a beaming smile.

His passion for medicine was sparked by his OBs from Kawempe Muslim, who were already making an impact in community health.

“They were engaging in a lot of community medicine at the time, and it inspired me to pursue a career in medicine,” he recalls.

That inspiration guided him through his years at KIU, where he developed strong interpersonal and survival skills during community placements across Uganda.

Sharif also distinguished himself as a leader, serving as Class President, Guild Union Member, and participating in associations such as the Association of Medical Students KIU (AMSKIU), BANKOSA, and the Red Cross Society.

“I have been involved in leadership throughout my time at Kampala International University, and I’m honoured to have served my fellow students,” he says.

His journey was not without challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak extended his study period, but he remained determined.

“We were affected by COVID (2020–2021) and then Ebola in 2023, but I learned to adapt and persevere,” he explains. “Resilience, persistence, and ultimate trust in the Almighty are the greatest keys to survival.”

Sharif is deeply grateful to KIU’s staff and leadership for their support and guidance.

“KIU has continued to be a centre of excellence for higher learning, and it’s becoming better and better every day. The nature of training of medical practitioners at KIU is impressive, with professors from different parts of the world and continent sharing their expertise,” he reflects.

Looking ahead, Sharif is eager to begin his internship and pursue a Master of Medicine in Radiology.

“There are a lot of challenges we faced during our course of study, but I’m confident that I have been equipped with the skills and knowledge to make a difference,” he says.

He also acknowledges the role of his family in his success.

“The journey would have been more hectic without my parents’ support,” he adds.

Sharif’s story highlights the impact of hard work, faith, and the support of those around him. As he prepares to graduate, he carries with him the determination to serve communities and advance medical practice.
