KIU, Western Campus - The Institute of Biomedical Research (IBR) at Kampala International University's (KIU) Western Campus recently concluded a landmark training on "DNA Extraction and Purification". Held on August 6, 2025, the event was a powerful demonstration of the Western Campus's growing status as a premier research hub for biomedical sciences.
The intensive program was designed to enhance the capabilities of researchers and students in crucial molecular biology techniques. By providing hands-on experience, the training directly contributes to advancements in health research and clinical practice. The event received high-level support from university leadership, with key figures in attendance, including Prof. Erick Mabonga, DVC Western Campus; Madam Asiat Mbabazi, University Secretary; and other senior officials from various departments. This widespread participation underscored the university's collective commitment to research excellence.
A team of experts from the IBR, including Mr. Abubakar Musoba, Dr. Ibrahim Wawata, and Mr. Kaijuka Derrick, led the practical sessions. They equipped participants—a diverse group of academic staff and postgraduate students—with essential skills using a unique, in-house DNA kit. This kit, developed directly in the IBR lab, is a testament to the institute's innovative spirit and is now used for both research and diagnostic purposes. The hands-on application of this tool allowed participants to master the fundamental techniques of DNA extraction from various samples.
The successful training reflects the IBR's unwavering commitment to providing cutting-edge scientific education and fostering a culture of research excellence at KIU's Western Campus.
