By Farah Ismail Said – Master of Public Administration Student
In 2023, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life: leaving my home and family in Somalia to pursue a Master of Public Administration at Kampala International University (KIU) in Uganda. I knew I was chasing a dream but I did not fully understand then just how much this journey would shape my life, both personally and professionally.
Arriving in Uganda was a mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and curiosity. Everything felt new: the environment, the people, the language, the food, and even the academic system. It was not easy at first. I missed home deeply and often found myself adjusting to both academic demands and cultural differences. But over time, those challenges turned into lessons, and Uganda began to feel like a second home.
What stood out most during my time at KIU was the warmth of the people—students, lecturers, and local Ugandans alike. From the very beginning, I was welcomed with open arms. I quickly learned that even though we came from different backgrounds and countries, we all shared similar goals: to grow, to learn, and to create a better future.
The diverse community at KIU created a rich learning environment where ideas, languages, and cultures blended together beautifully. I did not just study—I connected, collaborated, and formed friendships that I will carry with me for a lifetime.
The academic program in Public Administration was both challenging and inspiring. My courses in governance, policy analysis, leadership, and public service taught me not only theoretical knowledge but also how to apply that knowledge in real-world situations. I learned how to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with purpose.
Late nights filled with research, group discussions, and presentations helped me grow into a more disciplined and confident individual. The dedication of my professors and the support from my classmates pushed me to aim higher and believe in my abilities.
My time at KIU was not just about books and exams. One of the most memorable experiences was the KIU Cultural Gala, where students from different countries showcased their traditions, dances, music, and food. It was a beautiful reminder that while we come from different places, we all have something valuable to share.
Experiencing Ugandan culture—from the local food like rolex and matooke to the vibrant music and festivals—taught me how to find joy in diversity and how to be open to new experiences. Living in Uganda has made me more adaptable, appreciative, and understanding.
As I approach the graduation date set for Saturday, July 26th, 2025, I look back with immense pride and gratitude. This journey has been more than an academic pursuit—it has been a period of self-discovery, resilience, and transformation.
KIU has given me more than a degree. It has given me knowledge, confidence, global friendships, and memories I will treasure forever. I am now better equipped to contribute meaningfully to public service and leadership in my home country and beyond.
To anyone considering studying abroad or pursuing higher education—take the leap. It will challenge you, but it will also change you in the best ways.
