Titans Strike First in Division One Semifinal Series, Two Wins from NBL Return

KIU, Main Campus — KIU Titans took a giant step toward a return to Uganda’s National Basketball League on Tuesday, 29th September, 2026, defeating YMCA Hamsters 74-57 in Game One of their FUBA Division One semifinal series at YMCA Court in Wandegeya.

With the best-of-five series now in their hands, the Titans need two more victories to secure a place in the finals as well as in the National Basketball League.

Chieng Garang was at the heart of the victory, producing a dominant double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead all scorers and give the Titans a commanding presence inside.

Richard Mutawulu added 15 points, while Daniel Odokonyero delivered a complete floor game with 12 points, eight rebounds and a game-high six assists.

The Titans' strength on the boards proved particularly important as they repeatedly denied YMCA second-chance opportunities and kept control of the contest.

YMCA's Christian Ndibu battled hard on the glass, collecting 17 rebounds, while Barack Eminat Victor grabbed 14. Their individual efforts, however, could not prevent the Hamsters from falling 0-1 behind in the series.

For Lutwama's side, the opening victory provides an important psychological boost as the Titans continue their quest to climb back to the National Basketball League after their relegation last season.

The team has steadily rebuilt its campaign around a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, and Tuesday's performance offered another indication of its growing confidence as the playoffs reach their decisive stage.

Game Two is set for Friday, 2nd October, 2026 at YMCA Court in Wandegeya.

The Titans will enter the contest knowing that another victory would leave them just one win away from a place in the top flight, while YMCA will be fighting to draw level and keep the series alive.

For KIU, the equation is simple: two more wins, and the Titans are back where they believe they belong.
