Growing up in a small village in Maniema province, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mussa Kachunga Stanis born into a polygamous family of 16 children and raised amidst a war outbreak in 1996 after the passing of his father at only four years, Stanis’ journey to Kampala International University (KIU) is a testament to not being defined by your challenges or trauma but rather turning your challenges into opportunities.
Stemming his roots from his late father who was a local tribunal judge and teacher, Stanis was encouraged to pursue education because he believed it was a way out for him and his family from the chackles of war, loss, helplessness and a small life of only doing home chores.
“I told myself that if I survived, I would finish school and work to help my community. In 2009, I got my chance to pursue higher education in Uganda, and I joined KIU to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from 2010-2013,” Stanis said.
He added, “My KIU experience was transformative and the university's rigorous curriculum, diverse learning environment, and emphasis on research and innovation equipped me with critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I developed a strong foundation in grants and communications management, which has been instrumental in my career”.
Since graduating from KIU, Stanis has achieved several significant milestones. “I secured a position at a reputable organization, where I've applied the skills and knowledge gained during my studies. I've worked with several international organizations, including IMA World Health, Women for Women International, and International Medical Corps,” narrated Stanis.
One of Stanis’ fond memories at KIU is the annual cultural gala. “The vibrant atmosphere, filled with music, dance, and delicious food from various cultures, created a sense of unity among students. I particularly enjoyed showcasing my own culture through traditional performances, which allowed me to connect with others and share our unique backgrounds,” he noted.
As KIU celebrates its 25th anniversary, Stanis is proud to be part of the university's legacy of commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement.
“As we celebrate this significant milestone anniversary, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire KIU community and hope that the university continues to foster a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and social responsibility,” added Stanis.
