KIU, MAIN CAMPUS - National Social Security Fund (NSSF) alongside Absa Bank Uganda on Monday, 7th April, 2025 held a 2025 Career Expo at Kampala International University (KIU), Main Campus, bringing together students, young professionals, and industry experts to discuss "Smart Money Moves." The event aimed to equip the youth with essential financial skills and knowledge to achieve financial freedom.
Speakers at the expo shared valuable insights on various topics, including budgeting, investment, debt management, and financial planning.
Dr. Jacob Eneji Ashibi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, cautioned against reckless spending and investing in schemes with unrealistic returns. "Money is hard to get but easy to spend so spend it wisely, " he said.
Dr. Ashibi's words of wisdom resonated with the students, serving as a timely reminder to be mindful of their financial decisions. In a world where get-rich-quick schemes and impulse purchases can be tempting, his cautionary advice to avoid quick money schemes encouraged students to adopt more thoughtful and responsible financial decisions.
Apollo Mbowa, Manager Financial Literacy and Mass Education at NSSF, delivered a powerful message, emphasizing that one's background shouldn't dictate their future. He encouraged attendees to take charge of their financial lives and work towards creating a better future for themselves.
"It is not your problem that you came from a poor background, it is your problem that a poor background continues with you," Mbowa emphasized, adding, "Education is just the starting point, but it's the skills that truly matter in today's job market".
Mbowa highlighted the importance of acquiring practical skills, urging students to focus on building their skillset, even through volunteering, to increase their employability and competitiveness. When it comes to income paths, Mbowa outlined two options: employment and entrepreneurship.
"The qualification will get you into the room but the skill will get you the seat," he said, stressing the need for a strong Curriculum Vitae (CV) that showcases both qualifications and skills. For those considering entrepreneurship, he cautioned that it requires a high level of performance and innovation to succeed.
Stevens Mwanje, Chief Financial Officer at NSSF, provided practical tips on managing finances effectively. He warned against borrowing money without understanding the terms and advised attendees to prioritize debt repayment, allocate income wisely, and review their budgets regularly.
"To avoid unnecessary debt and financial stress, allocate your money wisely, have a proper budget, consider necessities first, and avoid impromptu purchases," Mwanje advised. "Most importantly, ensure your expenses never exceed your income," he added.
As the discussion on financial literacy unfolded, Hope Murungi, Coordinator Civil Society and Private Sector at Uganda AIDS Commission emphasized that prioritizing financial stability is important, but it's equally crucial to prioritize well-being, particularly in the context of HIV/AIDS.
"Saving money is crucial, but equally important is saving your life; guard your health, especially against HIV/AIDS, which is alarmingly high in urban areas – prioritize your well-being alongside your finances," she added.
Marjorine Nantambi, Finance and Personal Growth Coach, emphasized the importance of a mindful approach to life. "Skills and attitude are now more valuable than academic excellence alone," she stressed, encouraging attendees to be intentional about their personal growth. "Start working towards your goals today," she urged.
Nantambi also advised students to be deliberate about their mental diet, cautioning against the misuse of social media and instead encouraging them to feed their minds with useful content that promotes their well-being.
Closing the event, Christine Ainebyoona, Campus administrator, Main Campus took a moment to reflect on the success of the Career Expo, thanking the speakers, students, and partners for their contributions. Her words of appreciation highlighted the importance of collaboration and community in achieving shared goals.
"As we conclude this year's Career Expo, focusing on financial literacy and career readiness, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed speakers, students, and partners for making this event a resounding success. Your participation and engagement have enriched our discussions on managing finances, building careers, and achieving financial stability, inspiring our students to strive for excellence in all aspects of life," she added.
The NSSF Career Expo 2025 was a resounding success, empowering the youth with the tools and confidence to make informed financial decisions. Students left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to achieve financial freedom.
