KIU, Main Campus-When Joy Kahunde declared her interest in April 2024 to run for Guild Member of Parliament representing the School of Mathematics and Computing (SOMAC) at Kampala International University (KIU), she had no idea how much her decision would shape her future.

Now, as her term comes to a close, Kahunde is set to leave office as the first woman to serve as vice president under a female guild president in KIU’s history.

Many were surprised when Guild President Yvonne Keinembazi, KIU’s 21st and also the second female guild president, selected Kahunde as her running mate in the 2024–2025 student leadership race. But Keinembazi said her choice was based on what she saw in the then MP-elect from SOMAC.

“Kahunde had great leadership skills and was such an open-minded person. She’s very humble yet so vibrant and disciplined,” Keinembazi said.

Weeks before officially handing over office, Kahunde said she already considers her tenure a success.

“We have done our best, and there is no room for regrets. Personally, it’s been a wonderful journey, filled with inspiration and exploration,” she said.
“I am a changed fellow. My life has turned around, and I can’t even describe exactly what I feel especially considering that our term has ended.”

She credits her time in student leadership with increasing her self-confidence and improving her public speaking abilities.

“Serving the students and the university at large has opened doors for me. I’ve interacted with several notable people at KIU and beyond,” she said.

While the benefits were many, Kahunde also noted the valuable lessons she learned. “I’ve realized how important it is to think critically and stay open-minded,” she said.

With one semester left before completing a Bachelor of Science in Statistics, Kahunde said she now plans to focus on personal growth and academic achievement.

“I would like to proceed to a master’s degree immediately after completing my bachelor’s degree,” she said.

Shakiro Iluku, patron of the Guild Union and KIU dean of students, described Kahunde as a “versatile, God-fearing leader” who contributed significantly to the outgoing Guild Union team.

“She is one person who has preached peace, faith, exemplary leadership and coordination, especially in the university’s girls’ hostel,” Iluku said.

“To me, Kahunde has been a blessing to the Guild Union,” Keinembazi echoed the praise, commending her vice president’s dedication.

“I appreciate her for being a hard-working lady. And if I am to give marks, I would give her nine out of 10,” she added.

Kahunde encourages her peers to consider participating in student leadership, whether through associations or the Guild Union.

“Embracing such opportunities will not leave you the same. Trust me, I’m not that girl I was a year ago,” she said.

Kahunde and her fellow members of the 2024–2025 Guild Union Government and Parliament will officially hand over power after the election of the next Guild president on April 25, 2025.
