KIU Ranked Among The Top 50 Universities in Africa in the Latest Webometrics Ranking

Kampala International University (KIU), the No. 1 Private University and 2nd overall best ranked University in Uganda, has solidified its position in the latest Webometrics World Ranking of Universities for three rank sessions in a row. The January 2024 University ranking in relation to the East African Region, KIU was ranked 3rd after Makerere University and the University of Nairobi, respectively, while the University of Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania, came 4th, followed by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in the 5th position.
On the African Continent, KIU has moved up to the 47th position compared to 61st, a position it attained in the July 2023 ranking. In Africa, KIU and Makerere Universities were the only Ugandan universities that made it to the list of the top 50. Uganda is said to have more than 53 accredited Universities, made up of both public (just over 10) and private universities (majority).

Whilst KIU has maintained its 2nd ranked overall university in Uganda, it has improved significantly in some aspects of the ranking. It is No 1 in Uganda in the aspect of “Impact”, 2nd in the aspect of “Openness” and 3rd in the aspect of “Excellence”. When this news was broken, staff, students, and all KIU stakeholders were overwhelmed by joy.
When the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, was contacted for a comment, he was very excited and appreciated everyone for their efforts. He stated thus, “We have not only maintained the 2nd best overall position in Uganda, but we have also become No. 1 in the aspect of Impact, with an index of 710, followed by Makerere University at 1736 and in 3rd place Mbarara University of Science and Technology at 6039. Remember, the lower the value the higher, and the best is the index.
“We are narrowing the gap, and at the moment our formula and passcode of moving from One-Two-Three, followed by One-One-Two, and thereafter we aspire to attain a One-One-One, by that time the game will be over”,
The Vice-Chancellor stated that the current efforts to boost the University’s research and innovation outputs will drive its ranking to the highest level sooner rather than later since it will positively bridge the gap of “Excellence”, which is largely contributed by high impact and indexed Scientific Research, Innovation and Publications”, stated Prof Mpezamihigo.
He called upon his management, administrative, academic, research, and innovation teams not to be complacent and relaxed. He appreciated the University Council, the Board of Trustees, and specifically the Chairman Dr. Hon Alhaj Hassan Basajjabalaba, for his great support and enthusiasm in pushing management to get better results each time around. The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions offering every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated, and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world. The primary objective of the Webometrics Ranking is to promote Open Access to the knowledge generated by Universities.
This is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. The ranking uses both webometric (all missions) and bibliometric (research mission) indicators.
