KIU, Western Campus - On June 20, 2025, Kampala International University's Western Campus (KIU-WC) proudly held its Second Public Lecture Series under the theme “Innovative Teaching Strategies for the 21st Century Learners.” The event drew 61 participants both onsite and online, affirming the university's dedication to educational reform and thought leadership.

The session opened with a warm welcome by Prof. Patrick M. Aja, while the opening address was given by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of KIU-WC, Prof. Eric Mabonga. In his address, Prof. Mabonga underscored the pressing need for innovative teaching approaches, citing KIU’s continued efforts to empower educators in adapting to modern learning environments.

Dr. Tukur Muhammed delivered the keynote lecture, offering a compelling analysis of why traditional teaching methods must evolve. He emphasized the shifting cognitive patterns of 21st-century learners and highlighted interactive technologies, digital platforms, and active learning frameworks as tools to meet their needs. Dr. Muhammed also addressed implementation challenges—such as inadequate infrastructure and resistance to change—and proposed targeted solutions including tailored professional development and tech integration.

Following the keynote, participants engaged in breakout discussions around three thought-provoking questions on innovation in African classrooms. Key challenges identified included limited resources, inconsistent student attendance, and gaps in teacher training. Suggested solutions focused on capacity building, accessibility to digital tools, and nurturing adaptive mindsets among educators. While most groups agreed that innovative teaching is a learned skill, one team offered a blended view—asserting that effective teaching combines both inherent traits and cultivated expertise.

Assoc. Prof. Milon Selvam Dennison offered closing remarks, commending the richness of dialogue and reaffirming KIU’s vision of progressive education. A group photo sealed the day, symbolizing a shared commitment to educational transformation.

Through programs like the Public Lecture Series, KIU continues to position itself at the forefront of academic excellence and transformative teaching, shaping the future of education in Uganda and beyond.
