Kampala International University (KIU) Main Campus recently hosted a 10-day International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL) training session, a globally recognized certification program designed to assess and validate digital skills. The training, which ran from May 20th to May 30th, 2025, brought together 150 refugees from South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Eritrea.

The training aimed to equip refugees with basic computer skills in digital marketing, web editing, and cybersecurity, enhancing their employability in the job market. Engr. Assoc. Prof. Ibrahim Sani Madugu, Director of ICT at KIU, noted that the partnership between KIU and ICDL was formalized on May 19th, 2025, with KIU's ICT laboratories serving as the training venue.

"Besides equipping refugees with computer skills, the ICDL certification which is recognised globally ought to boost the trainees' employability in the job market," said Engr. Assoc. Prof. Madugu.

Dan Muhenda, Market Development Executive at ICDL Africa, further noted that the training was funded by Uganda’s Ministry of ICT in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in a bid to boost self-employment among refugees since jobs are scarce.

"Instead of giving them the fish, we teach them how to fish such that they can learn to integrate into the community and also be self-reliant," said Muhenda, adding "in the ten days of training, the refugees are equipped with basic computer skills which act as a starting point".

Notably, ICDL has over 45 accredited centers globally, and this training was part of a larger initiative. Refugee trainings were simultaneously taking place at Bugema University, Koboko, and Kiryandongo, demonstrating a collaborative effort to reach more beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries of the training expressed their gratitude and excitement about the skills acquired. Khan Kiir from South Sudan exclaimed, "This training has been a game-changer for me. The digital marketing skills I've gained will be a massive boost to my career as I pursue my Bachelor's in Business Administration".

Aksanti Kulimushi from the DRC enthusiastically shared, "I am not just gaining skills, I'm gaining a new perspective! With digital marketing expertise, I will empower young people in my community to market their businesses online and unlock new opportunities – it's a chance to make a real difference".

Chatim Kuol Tap from South Sudan praised the training, saying, "The ICDL training has opened doors for me! I've improved my communication skills through emails and social platforms, and I am excited to apply these skills in my daily life and career – it's a fantastic opportunity".

Adam Saad from Sudan highlighted the practical benefits, stating, "With the cybersecurity skills I have acquired, I will be able to protect myself and my community from hacking and scamming – it is a vital skill in today's digital age, and I am grateful for this training".

Amna Abu Algasim from Sudan also expressed her excitement, saying, "This globally recognised certificate will significantly increase my chances of getting a job in Uganda – it's a stepping stone to a brighter future, and I am thankful for this opportunity".

This initiative demonstrates KIU's commitment to giving back to the community by providing a platform for refugees to acquire digital skills, enhance their employability, and promote self-reliance. By hosting the ICDL training, KIU is playing a vital role in supporting the refugee community and contributing to their socio-economic empowerment.
