#KIU31STGRAD: Completing My Degree Is a Tribute to My Mother-Says Ahmed Abdi

KIU,Main Campus- When Afaf Ahmed Abdi enrolled for a Bachelor of Laws at Kampala International University (KIU), she never imagined she would finish her journey without her biggest cheerleader - her mother.

In her final year, Abdi was devastated by the death of her mother, a loss that cast a heavy shadow over what should have been a celebratory period.

“In my final year, I faced the loss of my mother,” she said. “Despite the grief, I remained committed to my studies, drawing strength from my father’s encouragement and my family’s support. Completing my degree became not just an academic goal, but a personal tribute to her memory.”

Abdi described the experience as a deeply emotional journey- one filled with late nights, countless drafts, and emotional growth. She credited her family’s unwavering support for helping her navigate the heavy burden of grief while keeping her academic focus intact.

She said her decision to study law was rooted in a strong belief in justice and equality.

“I chose to study law because I have always believed in justice, fairness, and the power of advocacy,” Abdi said. “I wanted to be part of a profession that upholds human dignity, challenges injustice, and empowers the voiceless. KIU provided the perfect environment to nurture that vision, with its academic strength and commitment to excellence.”

Reflecting on her time at KIU, Abdi said the experience helped her grow not only as a student but also as a person.

“My time at the university has shaped me in profound ways, personally and professionally. I have learned how to think critically, argue respectfully, and lead with purpose. The institution has taught me that law is not just a career; it’s a responsibility.”

Her participation in the university’s legal aid clinic and an internship experience, she said, gave her a glimpse into the real-world practice of law beyond the lecture halls.

Looking ahead, Abdi plans to pursue a Master of Laws degree and hopes to use her legal knowledge to address societal challenges and advocate for justice.

She offered words of encouragement to fellow students: “Believe in your abilities, stay curious, and never forget why you started.”
